About William Paterson University

William Paterson University is a comprehensive public institution located in Wayne, which is a township in the US state of New Jersey, in Passaic County, with over 54 000 people, living within its limits, as estimated during the 2000 census.

William Paterson was established in 1855 as the Paterson City Normal School, and, for over a century, its exclusive mission was to train teachers for New Jersey schools. Its current name was adopted in June, 1997, when it gained university status, from the Commission on Higher Education.

The university currently offers its students various majors and degrees, providing 44 undergraduate and 21 graduate programs, through its five colleges, which are: Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health, also offering certification in early childhood, elementary, secondary, and special education, and pre-professional programs in dentistry, law, medicine, and veterinary medicine (at the request of students).

Athletics

The athletic teams at William Paterson are known as the Pioneers and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are orange and black, and their mascot is Billy the Bear.
